THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami advisory Wednesday following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia. Coastal areas on the eastern side of the Philippines facing the Pacific Ocean are expected to experience tsunami waves of less than one meter.
The first waves are anticipated to arrive between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. on July 30, but Phivolcs cautions that these may not be the largest and that waves could continue for several hours.
A precautionary advisory remains in effect for the following provinces: Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao de Oro.
Residents in coastal areas are urged to stay away from beaches and shorelines until the advisory is lifted. Those living near the coast are advised to move inland, and boat owners are instructed to move their vessels to deeper waters. Phivolcs also advises boats already at sea to remain offshore until further notice.
