A MAGNITUDE 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Surigao del Norte on Saturday afternoon, August 29, at 2:32 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The temblor had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 9.97°N, 126.52°E — approximately 44 kilometers north 62° east of General Luna, Surigao del Norte. The quake was tectonic in origin, consistent with the region’s location along major fault lines.
Instrumental intensities were recorded in several areas, with Intensity II felt in Surigao City and Intensity I in Hinundayan, Southern Leyte.
PHIVOLCS has activated its monitoring systems and invited the public to share their experience through the hashtag #iFelt_SurigaoDelNorteEarthquake. Authorities noted that aftershocks may occur but no immediate damage or tsunami threat has been reported. Residents are advised to remain alert and report any unusual ground movement or structural damage to local authorities.
