DPWH inspects collapsed Ninoy Aquino bridge in Tarlac City

Metrosundaily August 29, 2026

PUBLIC Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon personally inspected the damaged Ninoy Aquino Bridge in Tarlac City on Saturday, August 29, 2026, following the partial collapse of the structure the previous evening.

Approximately 60 meters of the bridge gave way at around 11:56 p.m. on August 28, leaving a massive gap in the vital thoroughfare and raising serious concerns over structural integrity and public safety.

According to the DPWH, the collapse was triggered by strong river currents brought about by heavy rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. The powerful flow of water battered and eroded the bridge’s foundation, weakening its support until the section gave way. The sustained downpours and swollen river have been attributed to the lingering effects of the monsoon, which has been dumping heavy rains across Luzon and nearby regions for several days.

The bridge, which serves as a key transportation link in the province, is now impassable, disrupting travel and commerce in the area. Secretary Dizon’s visit aims to assess the full extent of the damage, determine the immediate safety risks, and outline the necessary steps for repairs or reconstruction. Authorities have advised motorists and commuters to follow alternative routes while the investigation into the structural failure is ongoing and restoration work is underway.
