HEALTH (DOH) Secretary Ted Herbosa issued a strong warning against the self-medication of doxycycline, emphasizing the importance of consulting a physician before taking this antibiotic.
Secretary Herbosa highlighted the potential for serious health consequences associated with the improper use of doxycycline. He stressed that a doctor’s assessment is crucial to determine the appropriate dosage and treatment duration, based on the individual’s specific health condition and risk factors.
Taking doxycycline without a doctor’s prescription can lead to ineffective treatment and the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing public health concern.
The DOH Secretary explained that AMR occurs when bacteria adapt and become resistant to antibiotics due to misuse or overuse.
This resistance makes treating infections significantly more difficult and can have life-threatening consequences. Secretary Herbosa urged the public to strictly adhere to a doctor’s instructions regarding dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment.
He also cautioned against sharing antibiotics with others and stressed the importance of completing the full course of medication, even if symptoms improve prematurely. The DOH strongly advocates for seeking professional medical advice to ensure safe and effective antibiotic use, emphasizing the serious risks associated with self-medicating with doxycycline and other antibiotics.
