THE combined impact of recent tropical cyclones and the relentless Southwest Monsoon or Habagat has left 33 people dead and affected an estimated 8.8 million individuals across the country throughout the month of August, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed on Monday, August 31.
The staggering figures underscore the scale of devastation wrought by successive weather systems that dumped torrential rains, triggered widespread flooding, and unleashed deadly landslides across multiple regions, particularly in Luzon and the Visayas.
The month-long crisis was driven by the overlapping effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay, followed by the enhanced monsoon and the formation of Tropical Depression Pilandok, which together prolonged the period of heavy rainfall and strong winds. Communities in Northern Luzon, the Cordilleras, Central Luzon, and parts of the Visayas bore the brunt of the disaster, with thousands of homes submerged, infrastructure damaged, and vast agricultural areas destroyed. The OCD reported that the casualties resulted primarily from landslides, drowning, and weather-related accidents.
Disaster response agencies continue to conduct relief and recovery operations as authorities assess the full extent of damage to public infrastructure, agriculture, and private property.
The massive number of people affected highlights the urgent need for sustained assistance, including food, shelter, and livelihood support, as families begin the difficult process of rebuilding.
