Thailand declares Martial Law amid worsening Cambodia border conflict

Metrosundaily July 26, 2025

THAILAND implemented martial law in eight border districts on Friday, July 25th, 2025, in response to escalating tensions and armed clashes with Cambodia.

The declaration, announced by Border Defence Command commander Apichart Sapprasert, covers seven districts in Chanthaburi province and one in Trat province.

The stated purpose is to protect Thailand’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens, amid a significant deterioration in relations between the two neighboring countries. This marks the lowest point in Thai-Cambodian relations in over a decade, with both sides engaging in intense cross-border exchanges of fire, including air strikes, since Thursday.

The conflict has forced a mass displacement of civilians, with tens of thousands fleeing their homes in the affected border regions on both sides.

The escalating violence has prompted international concern, leading the UN Security Council to schedule an emergency meeting to address the crisis.

The conflict’s impact is widespread, with over 58,000 people from four affected Thai provinces seeking refuge in temporary shelters, according to the Thai Health Ministry. Cambodian authorities reported over 4,000 evacuations from border areas.

The immediate trigger for the recent surge in violence remains unclear, but the underlying cause is a long-standing territorial dispute, potentially exacerbated by recent skirmishes and heightened tensions. The situation remains volatile, and the imposition of martial law highlights the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for de-escalation and diplomatic resolution.

The declaration of martial law underscores the gravity of the situation and the Thai government’s determination to protect its citizens and territorial integrity.

The large-scale displacement of civilians further emphasizes the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. The international community’s involvement, as demonstrated by the UN Security Council’s emergency meeting, underscores the global concern over the escalating tensions and the potential for further instability in the region.

The long-term implications of this conflict remain uncertain, but the immediate focus is on de-escalation, humanitarian aid, and finding a peaceful resolution to the underlying territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
