No Pinoys harmed in M7.7 Indonesia quake — PH Embassy

Metrosundaily August 15, 2026

THE Philippine Embassy in Jakarta confirmed on Saturday that no Filipinos have been reported affected by the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off eastern Indonesia.

In an official advisory, the Embassy stated: “Thus far, there are no Filipinos affected by the earthquake, but the Embassy continues to reach out to other members of the Filipino community in the area and stands ready to extend assistance, as necessary.” The mission remains in close contact with Filipino nationals and is monitoring the situation to ensure the welfare of all citizens residing or working in the affected regions.

The massive earthquake occurred early Saturday morning, claiming at least 38 lives and leaving two others in critical condition. The tremor also triggered tsunami waves measuring less than one meter in height, prompting brief coastal evacuations. Indonesian authorities have since confirmed that the tsunami threat has passed, but the full extent of destruction across the affected provinces is still being assessed.

Suharyanto, head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, reported that several people remain trapped inside collapsed buildings, while landslides have blocked major roads and hampered rescue efforts. Emergency response teams are working to clear debris and reach isolated communities, though disrupted infrastructure continues to slow operations. The Philippine Embassy has assured the public that it will provide timely updates and ready assistance should any Filipino nationals require aid in the aftermath of the disaster.
