PHILIPPINE Ambassador to Iran Roberto Manalo confirmed on Monday that no Filipinos in Iran have been reported killed or injured in the wake of the recent airstrikes launched by the United States and Israel. The assurance comes as tensions remain high in the region following the attacks.
Ambassador Manalo stated that the Philippine Embassy is in constant communication with the Filipino community in Iran through various channels, including Whatsapp, Viber, email, and social media. He noted that they are able to easily contact Filipinos whenever there is internet access and that, so far, there have been no reports of any casualties or injuries among them.
There are approximately 840 Filipinos residing in Iran, the majority of whom are permanent residents, according to Manalo. Many are married to Iranian nationals, and their children hold Philippine passports while also being considered Iranian nationals. These individuals are not classified as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as they are permanent residents of Iran.
The number of OFWs in Iran is estimated to be around 40 to 50, primarily working in restaurants and hotels. The Philippine Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and remains in contact with the Filipino community to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of heightened tension.
