WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly escorted out of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night, following a shooting incident that unfolded near the event venue.
Security agents moved quickly to secure the couple and other attendees after reports emerged that a man had opened fire on personnel stationed at a security checkpoint close to the Washington Hilton hotel, where the prestigious gathering was being held. The incident triggered immediate security protocols, putting law enforcement agencies on high alert as they moved to contain the situation and ensure the safety of all present.
According to reports, the suspect fired a shotgun at a Secret Service officer manning the checkpoint before he was overpowered, tackled, and taken into custody by responding security personnel.
Speaking to reporters during an emergency briefing held later at the White House, President Trump confirmed that the agent who was shot escaped serious injury, crediting his protective gear.
“He was saved by his bulletproof vest and is in good shape,” the president said, providing reassurance regarding the condition of the wounded officer. At this early stage of the investigation, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact motive or intended target of the attack, though Trump stated that he believes he was the intended target. This marks the third reported attempt on his life since 2024, a time when political divisions across the United States have become increasingly pronounced and tense.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident from the Los Angeles area. While details about his background and personal circumstances are still being verified, initial findings indicate that he worked as a teacher in Torrance, California.
Washington’s interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll disclosed that Allen was found in possession of multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives, suggesting he arrived at the scene armed and prepared.
Following his arrest, the suspect was brought to a local medical facility for evaluation, though officials noted that it remains too early to draw definitive conclusions about what drove him to carry out the attack. Carroll also shared preliminary information indicating that Allen was registered as a guest at the hotel, raising critical questions regarding security measures.
A key focus of the ongoing investigation will be determining how the suspect managed to bring a shotgun into the premises, given that the venue hosts one of the most high-profile events in the nation’s capital and is typically protected by strict security screenings and procedures.
The dinner was attended by top members of the President’s cabinet, senior government officials, and prominent figures from media and public life, all under heavy security presence.
Notably, this year marked the first time Trump attended the event as president, after choosing not to participate during previous years. Following the incident, the President addressed the media from the White House briefing room in a late-night session, appearing alongside Vice President JD Vance and other officials.
First Lady Melania Trump was also present, though she declined to make any remarks when asked to speak about the evening’s events. Describing the suspect as a “lone wolf” based on available information, Trump emphasized that there is no indication at this point that the attack was part of a larger organized plot or network.
