A PASSENGER believed to have pre-existing mental health issues jumped from a boat bound for Oriental Mindoro on Saturday, July 19, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Southern Tagalog.
The incident occurred approximately one nautical mile from Baco Chico Island. The PCG reported that the vessel’s captain stated the individual was spotted in the water by the chief steward, who immediately provided assistance and successfully rescued the passenger around noon.
The rescued passenger, identified as a 35-year-old male from Zamboanga City, was reported by the ship’s master to have a history of mental health challenges.
Despite the incident, both the passenger and his companion safely disembarked at the Port of Calapan. The quick response and successful rescue by the ship’s crew prevented a potentially tragic outcome.
The incident underscores the importance of providing appropriate support and accommodations for individuals with mental health conditions, particularly in travel situations. Further details regarding the passenger’s condition and the circumstances surrounding the jump were not immediately available.
