JUST days after its inauguration, the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela collapsed on Thursday evening, February 27, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Cagayan Valley on Friday, February 28.
The bridge, which cost P1.225 billion, had been under construction since November 2014 and was completed on February 1, 2025.
The bridge spanned 990 meters and consisted of 12 arch bridges, each 60 meters long, and 9 spans of Pre-Stressed Concrete Girder (PSCG) Type IVB. The approaches to the bridge totaled 664.10 linear meters. The DPWH reported that the contractor for the project was R.D. Interior, Jr. Construction.
The collapse occurred on Thursday when a dump truck, estimated to weigh 102 tons, passed over the bridge. Four vehicles were damaged in the incident.
“Further analysis on the cause of failure is still ongoing, and DPWH Region 2 has requested experts from the Bureau of Design and Bureau of Construction in the Central Office to conduct further evaluation and assessment,” the DPWH stated.
