KUNMING, YUNNAN PROVINCE, CHINA – Li Wei, a first-time mother from Kunming, China, is experiencing a pregnancy journey unlike any other, marked by two distinct and dramatic physical transformations.
According to a June 3, 2025 report by Albanian news website Telegrafi, Li experienced a significant “glow-up” during her first trimester, characterized by increased energy levels and radiant skin. Initially concerned by this unexpected change, Li consulted her doctor, who reassured her that the “pregnancy glow,” a phenomenon attributed to increased blood flow and hormonal changes, is a common occurrence.
However, by her fifth month, Li noticed a stark contrast to her earlier experience. Her appearance changed dramatically, with her nose enlarging and acne and wrinkles appearing on her face.
As her pregnancy progressed, these changes intensified, including the development of freckles across her cheeks, swelling in her hands and feet.
While her doctor assured her that these changes were normal, Li proactively adjusted her lifestyle, focusing on a diet lower in sugar and fat, and incorporating exercise into her routine. These changes, along with support and shared experiences from other mothers, helped Li manage her concerns.
Postpartum, Li experienced further changes, including hair loss and skin dryness, common occurrences after childbirth.
These experiences, while initially alarming, were normalized by the shared experiences of other mothers, although Li’s transformations were described as more drastic and intense.
Li documented her journey on Weibo, China’s equivalent of X (formerly Twitter), sharing her message of perseverance and the ultimate reward of motherhood. Her story quickly went viral, attracting international media attention.
In a recent photo, Li is seen with her original, flawless complexion, emphasizing the temporary nature of many pregnancy-related physical changes.
