PhilHealth reminds public of rabies benefit package amid recent cases

Metrosundaily June 6, 2025

THE Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) issued a public advisory on Friday, reminding Filipinos of its available rabies benefit package in light of recent animal bite incidents and rising concerns about rabies transmission.

PhilHealth members and their qualified dependents who have suffered animal bites are entitled to a comprehensive treatment package valued at P5,850.

This package covers essential medical services, including rabies vaccination, rabies immune globulin, local wound care, tetanus toxoid and anti-tetanus serum, antibiotics, and necessary medical supplies such as syringes, alcohol, and antiseptics.

The timely access to this coverage is crucial in preventing the progression of rabies and ensuring the well-being of those affected.

The advisory encourages individuals who have been exposed to rabies through animal bites to seek immediate medical attention at PhilHealth-accredited Animal Bite Treatment Centers or other health facilities.

While the Department of Health (DOH) reported a 32% decrease in rabies cases from January 1st to May 17th (124 cases compared to 183 during the same period last year), the reminder serves as a crucial preventative measure.

PhilHealth’s readily available financial assistance for rabies treatment significantly reduces the financial burden on individuals and families affected by animal bites, promoting timely and effective medical intervention to prevent potentially fatal outcomes.

The timely reminder underscores the importance of both preventative measures and readily accessible treatment in combating the threat of rabies.
