THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has instructed local officials in Batangas and Cavite to prepare and ensure the public’s safety amid the ongoing unrest of Taal Volcano.
According to the DILG, all local officials must remain vigilant due to the potential raising of the volcano’s Alert Level 2 status, following a series of minor steam-driven, gas-driven, and phreatomagmatic eruptions in the past week.
“Establish and strictly implement the critical preparedness actions based on Operation Listo protocols for volcanic eruption Taal volcano, and your respective contingency plans for guidance on the necessary actions to be undertaken,” stated DILG Undersecretary Marlo Iringan in the notice.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) mentioned on Saturday, October 5, that the alert level for the volcano may be raised to Alert Level 2 if the phreatomagmatic activity continues or intensifies.
Currently, Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1, indicating that it is still in abnormal condition and should not be interpreted as having ceased unrest or the threat of eruptive activity.
