RETIRED Major General Carlos Garcia, former Armed Forces comptroller, has been released from incarceration after completing his sentence, including good conduct time allowance.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) announced Garcia’s release, adding it was authorized by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.
Garcia was found guilty on charges including direct bribery and facilitating money laundering, among others.
BuCor reported that Garcia was admitted to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City on September 16, 2011, though his confinement began in June 2005.
Consequently, Garcia’s total time served in prison amounted to 17 years, five months, and eight days.
During his tenure as the deputy chief of staff for comptrollership at the AFP, Garcia amassed assets such as funds and real estate, procuring them through means such as commissions, gifts, shares, kickbacks, and other financial benefits while overseeing government contracts.
