A SCHOOL principal in Laua-an, Antique has been removed from her position after she ordered the removal of graduation togas from Grade 12 students.
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed this in a press briefing at Malacañang, stating that Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara reported the principal’s removal to the Palace.
“Yes, following the President’s directive, our Secretary, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, acted swiftly, and the teacher in question has been removed as principal of the school,” Castro said.
The incident occurred before the processional march at the graduation ceremony of Colonel Ruperto Abellon National School (CRANS) on April 15, 2025.
Reports indicate that the principal’s announcement was allegedly based on a DepEd order to simplify graduation attire. The principal also reportedly said he would personally hand out diplomas to each graduate in his office.
A teacher was seen approaching the principal to reason with him, but their facial expressions and gestures suggest the principal refused to comply.
However, Castro clarified that the principal could still teach in another school. “He was only removed as principal. His license is not dependent on the President’s or the DepEd Secretary’s orders,” she explained.
“She is still allowed to teach, and of course, her behavior will be assessed. This is necessary, especially since she is a teacher,” Castro added.
Meanwhile, Castro said Malacañang will leave it to the DepEd to determine the principal’s disposition, including whether she will face administrative charges or if his removal as principal is sufficient.
“We will consult with Secretary Angara on what further action needs to be taken. But for now, this is a swift action taken by Secretary Angara,” Castro concluded.
