THE Department of National Defense (DND) announced a significant boost to the Philippine Air Force (PAF) with the acquisition of 12 FA-50 Block 70 light combat aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI) in a deal exceeding $700 million.
This purchase, formalized earlier this month with the issuance of a Notice to Proceed, represents a substantial step forward in the AFP’s modernization program and builds upon the initial acquisition of 12 FA-50s between 2015 and 2017.
The FA-50 Block 70 represents a technological leap forward, boasting advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range.
The DND highlighted that this acquisition significantly enhances the country’s air defense capabilities, aligning perfectly with its Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept.
The comprehensive package includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system, ensuring the PAF is fully equipped to utilize these advanced aircraft effectively. Delivery is scheduled in phases over the next five years, with full completion expected by 2030. Key features of the Block 70 include aerial refueling capabilities and the incorporation of AESA radars, further enhancing their combat effectiveness.
This procurement underscores the Philippines’ commitment to strengthening its national defense and signifies deepening bilateral defense cooperation with the Republic of Korea.
The deal comes amidst ongoing defense negotiations with other nations as the Philippines continues to modernize its military capabilities.
The DND noted that the selection of the FA-50 Block 70 is a significant step, but the final decision on the acquisition of a multi-role fighter jet—potentially the most expensive acquisition under the Horizon project’s final phase—remains pending.
The PAF currently operates both FA-50s and A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, and the addition of these new jets will significantly expand its air power capabilities.
