THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will arrest and prosecute vloggers and trolls spreading false information and fake news online.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago announced the crackdown yesterday, citing a surge in online attacks. While respecting freedom of speech, Santiago emphasized that this right does not extend to fabricating stories.
The NBI is preparing to file charges, including violations of the anti-cybercrime law and inciting to sedition, against several individuals.
This includes US-based vlogger Maharlika, and those linked to former presidential spokesman Harry Roque for social media posts encouraging a “people power” movement. Santiago challenged Roque to return to the Philippines and lead any such movement if he is serious.
Santiago warned that arrests are imminent for those spreading false information that incites unrest. He stressed that freedom of speech and press are not absolute and have limitations.
The NBI is collaborating with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the National Telecommunications Commission to combat disinformation.
