PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has directed the swift distribution of a P5,000 fuel subsidy to public transport drivers affected by the rising oil prices caused by tensions in the Middle East.
The move aims to provide immediate relief to drivers of tricycles, jeepneys, and other public transportation modes struggling with increased fuel costs.
Executive Secretary Ralph Recto announced that he convened a meeting with Metro Manila mayors on Wednesday to ensure the rapid rollout of the subsidy.
He stressed the need for local officials to coordinate effectively in delivering the financial aid, anticipating the subsidy’s release next week. Recto reiterated the vital function of local government units in assessing the needs of their constituents and facilitating the distribution process.
“Bilang mayors, kayo ang higit na nakakaalam sa tunay na sitwasyon at bilang ng mga tricycle at jeepney drivers sa inyong mga lungsod. Kaya mahalaga ang ating pagtutulungan. Sa mabuting koordinasyon at sabayang pagkilos, mas mabilis nating maipaparating ang tulong sa bawat driver na nangangailangan,” Recto said. (As mayors, you know the situation and the number of tricycle and jeepney drivers in your areas. Our coordination is very important. Through our collective action, we can immediately extend assistance to our drivers.)
The government’s quick action aims to mitigate the economic impact of the oil price hike on everyday commuters and the drivers who serve them.
The subsidy is part of the broader efforts by the Marcos administration to support the transportation sector and ensure that public service remains accessible despite global oil market fluctuations. Local officials are urged to work closely with national agencies to ensure that the aid reaches the intended beneficiaries promptly.
