BOC intensifies Anti-Smuggling efforts, seizes P85B in illicit goods in 2024

admin February 12, 2025

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) significantly stepped up its fight against smuggling and illegal trade in 2024, seizing goods valued at PhP85.167 billion in over 2,100 successful operations.

This intensified enforcement, directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to protect national security and economic stability, targeted counterfeit products, illegal drugs, smuggled tobacco and vape products, and agricultural goods.

A key component was the continued Fuel Marking Program, marking nearly 20 billion liters of fuel (a 5% increase from the previous year), generating over PhP242 billion in tax revenue and curbing fuel smuggling.

The BOC also revoked the accreditations of 56 importers and customs brokers for violating regulations and filed 45 criminal cases against those involved in smuggling.

Collaboration was central, with three nationwide Intelligence Summits bringing together over 200 officers to improve coordination and response.

BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio emphasized that smuggling is a national security issue impacting all Filipinos, and the agency remains committed to protecting local industries, ensuring food security, and promoting fair business practices through intelligence, enforcement, and inter-agency cooperation.
