MRT-3 General Manager Oscar Bongon has confirmed that there will be no fare increase for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 this year, and likely not for the next one or two years.
He explained that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) regulates fares, and there is no current petition for a fare hike. Unlike private concessionaires who have contractual obligations for periodic fare adjustments, the MRT-3, being government-operated, does not have such requirements.
Meanwhile, Bongon announced that the MRT-3 aims to operate four-car train sets starting in June, coinciding with the anticipated completion of the pocket track extension on Taft Avenue and the North Avenue turn-back facility.
This infrastructure upgrade will enable the system to accommodate longer trains, increasing capacity by 33%.
