THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) solar-powered water filtration system has successfully provided 5,040 gallons of clean water to residents of Naga City, which was severely affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. The MMDA conducted its on-site water purification in the city’s barangays Mabolo and Triangulo, benefiting up to 604 families.
The deployment of the water purifiers was in direct response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to provide assistance to Bicol communities impacted by the storm. “We are going to run into that situation where water supply is critical,” the President said during a briefing last week at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Headquarters in Camp Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
In response, the MMDA sent a 30-man team to Bicol, equipped with 40 solar-powered water filtration systems, along with other essential equipment and supplies, including boats, life vests, chainsaws, tents, and medicines.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes emphasized that the agency’s deployment of personnel and resources is in accordance with the President’s call for a whole-of-government approach to disaster response. The MMDA continues to coordinate with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) to determine the most critical areas for their assistance.
