MMDA removes 562.8 tons of trash from pumping stations

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) removed a staggering 562.8 tons of trash from its pumping stations between July 18 and 22, 2025.

This massive cleanup effort took place amidst the heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm Crising. The affected pumping stations included key facilities like Tripa de Gallina and Tapayan.

The accumulation of various types and sizes of debris significantly impacts the functionality of the pumps, hindering their ability to effectively remove floodwaters during periods of intense rainfall.

Despite the challenges posed by the substantial amount of trash, all 71 MMDA pumping stations remain operational.

The MMDA’s efforts highlight the crucial role of these facilities in mitigating the effects of flooding in Metro Manila. The sheer volume of waste removed underscores the ongoing problem of improper waste disposal and its detrimental impact on the city’s drainage system.

The successful maintenance of operational capacity in spite of the challenges demonstrates the dedication and hard work of MMDA personnel in ensuring the city’s flood control capabilities remain effective. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved waste management practices to prevent future disruptions to the city’s crucial infrastructure.
