A MANILA teacher is under investigation by the Department of Education (DepEd) following accusations of child abuse, stemming from an incident where a student was allegedly forced to eat a cockroach.
The case has ignited concerns over student safety and well-being within the school system.
The DepEd swiftly responded to the allegations, confirming that its Schools Division Office in Manila received a formal complaint from a concerned parent. The complaint was escalated to the DepEd Central Office through the Learner Rights and Protection Division (LRPD) via the Learners TeleSafe Contact Center Helpline.
“Under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Angara, the Department of Education enforces a clear zero tolerance policy against any form of violence or abuse against learners,” DepEd stated, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring schools are safe environments for all students.
The alleged incident occurred on October 25, 2025, according to police reports. It is claimed that the teacher forced a male student to eat a cockroach after the student caught the teacher allegedly molesting another student in a school restroom. While the female student involved in the alleged molestation did not file a complaint, the male student who was allegedly forced to eat the cockroach filed a complaint in November, leading to the current child abuse investigation. The accused teacher has been released on bail of P120,000.
DepEd has directed its field office to implement immediate protective measures for the student involved, including class adjustments, psychosocial support, and continuous monitoring of the child’s welfare. A parallel inquiry is also underway regarding the molestation allegation to ensure the safety and support of all learners involved.
“DepEd ensures that the ongoing investigation is being handled swiftly and fairly,” the agency said, adding that appropriate administrative and legal actions will be taken against anyone found guilty, in accordance with the law and due process.
The department has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the safety, dignity, and rights of every student as the investigation proceeds.
