THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued show cause orders against 34 public utility vehicle operators after they deployed their units to the Iglesia ni Cristo gathering at the EDSA People Power Monument instead of providing service to commuters.
The move follows complaints and reports that regular transport routes were left uncovered on Tuesday, causing inconvenience to the riding public.
In a statement released Wednesday, July 1, the LTFRB emphasized that while it fully respects every individual’s right to join assemblies and express their views, this freedom must be balanced with public welfare. The agency noted that operators are bound by their franchises to operate their routes and serve passengers consistently, and that diverting vehicles without proper authorization directly disrupts mobility and affects the daily needs of thousands of commuters.
The operators, which include bus and UV Express companies, have been directed to explain why they should not face penalties for failing to render service. Their mandatory hearing is scheduled on July 9, during which they will be given the opportunity to present their side. The LTFRB warned that similar actions in the future may result in fines, suspension, or even cancellation of their operating permits.
