One of the sinkholes discovered after the magnitude 6.9 quake that hits Bogo City.
SAN REMIGIO, CEBU – More than 30 sinkholes have emerged in San Remigio, Cebu, following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the province on Tuesday.
According to San Remigio Mayor Mariano Martinez, at least 32 sinkholes have been discovered in their municipality, and the number is expected to rise.
“We cover them, or just declare the areas unsafe. But the problem is there are already buildings,” Martinez said, highlighting the challenges posed by the sinkholes’ appearance in populated areas.
In Sitio Sansan, Barangay Maño, a large sinkhole has filled with water, with two smaller sinkholes nearby. Another sinkhole was found near the sea, and a large sinkhole has appeared on the edge of a residential area.
A team from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has already begun mapping the Bogo Bay Fault, which caused the powerful earthquake that claimed the lives of 70 people. As of now, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau has not yet issued a response regarding the sinkholes.
