HOUSE of Representatives spokesperson Atty. Princess Abante issued a statement on Saturday expressing deep concern over reports that the Senate may act on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the impeachment case against the Vice President before the House exhausts its legal options.
Abante emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision is not yet final, and the House will soon file a Motion for Reconsideration, asserting its constitutional right and institutional integrity.
Abante highlighted the importance of allowing the Supreme Court to consider the House’s Motion for Reconsideration, especially given potential factual errors in the Court’s decision.
She cautioned that any premature action by the Senate, such as abandoning the impeachment trial, could be seen as a disregard for due process and an undermining of the House’s constitutional role.
The statement stressed the need to preserve the integrity of the impeachment process, emphasizing that this issue transcends the House and Senate, impacting the protection of democratic institutions and the system of checks and balances.
The House urged the Senate to exercise prudence and patience, allowing the judicial process to run its course. Abante reaffirmed the House’s commitment to the rule of law and its intention to utilize all available legal avenues to protect its constitutional mandate and ensure accountability.
