THE Department of Health (DOH) has issued a warning about a surge in leptospirosis cases across the Philippines, linked to the ongoing heavy rains caused by the southwest monsoon and recent storms.
Between July 13th and 31st, 2025, the DOH recorded 569 cases of the bacterial infection. Three health facilities reported the highest number of cases nationally during this period, each registering between 19 and 32 infections.
Leptospirosis is typically transmitted through contact with contaminated floodwater, animal urine, or contaminated food and drink.
The rainy season, with its increased frequency of flooding, creates ideal conditions for the spread of the disease. The DOH is urging the public to take precautions to minimize the risk of infection, including avoiding wading in floodwaters and practicing thorough hand hygiene. Further updates and preventative measures will be released by the DOH as the situation develops.
