First Dalian train rolls out boosting MRT-3 capacity

admin July 16, 2025

THE first Dalian train to be deployed under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. successfully completed its maiden voyage on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards easing congestion on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

President Marcos emphasized that the train underwent rigorous safety and security checks to ensure passenger safety, addressing years of delays.

He highlighted the fact that these trains had remained unused since 2014, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to resolving this long-standing issue and maximizing the existing infrastructure. The President underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “Since 2014, it’s only been deaf. Not available. That’s why we went back and made sure what needs to be done to use the Dalian Train.”

President Marcos has directed the acceleration of safety clearances for the remaining Dalian trains to further enhance the MRT-3’s capacity and improve the commuting experience.

He stressed the importance of utilizing these 48 trains, which have remained idle for a decade, to significantly increase passenger capacity. Each train has the potential to transport 1,200 passengers per trip, representing a substantial boost to the system’s overall efficiency. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that the first Dalian train’s journey was conducted safely following thorough safety and security checks, and that the process for the remaining trains is being expedited in response to the President’s directive.

Secretary Dizon explained that once safety checks are completed on the other Dalian trains, they will be integrated into the MRT-3 system, either supplementing the existing fleet or replacing trains requiring maintenance.

This strategic approach aims to optimize the MRT-3’s operational efficiency and provide much-needed relief to commuters. The deployment of the first Dalian train marks a significant achievement in the administration’s efforts to improve public transportation in Metro Manila, signaling a commitment to addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges and enhancing the commuting experience for millions of Filipinos.
