THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a warning on Sunday regarding increased seismic activity at Taal Volcano in Batangas province.
Phivolcs noted a sharp increase in real-time seismic energy measurement (RSAM) coupled with a low level of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission since last month.
This unusual combination of factors suggests a potential blockage or plugging of volcanic gas pathways within the volcano. Such a blockage could lead to a build-up of pressure, increasing the risk of a sudden, steam-driven eruption (phreatic eruption) or even a minor phreatomagmatic eruption. Phivolcs highlighted that a similar phreatic eruption occurred on June 17, lasting 17 minutes.
Phivolcs emphasized the importance of monitoring Taal Volcano closely. The lack of observable degassing, despite heightened seismic activity, is a significant indicator of potential pressure build-up within the volcano. While the current alert level remains unchanged, the agency stressed that the situation warrants close observation and vigilance.
Residents in the vicinity of Taal Volcano are advised to remain informed of any updates from Phivolcs and to follow any recommended safety protocols. The potential for a sudden eruption underscores the dynamic nature of volcanic activity and the importance of continuous monitoring and preparedness in areas with active volcanoes. Further updates and potential changes to the alert level will be communicated by Phivolcs as the situation evolves.
