Palace downplays VP Sara’s ‘bloodbath’ remark

admin May 19, 2025

MALACANANG has responded cautiously to Vice President Sara Duterte’s controversial statement that she “wants a bloodbath” during her upcoming impeachment trial.

Palace Press Secretary Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro described the Vice President’s remark as “somewhat violent,” expressing hope that it was merely a figure of speech and should not be interpreted literally. Castro added, “If that’s what she wants and there will really be discussions during the trial… let’s just allow it to take its course.”

The statement follows VP Duterte’s declaration that she welcomes the impeachment trial, scheduled to begin on July 30.

The impeachment complaint, filed by the House of Representatives, alleges misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings during her time as Davao City mayor, and controversial remarks targeting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez.

VP Duterte has denied the accusations, refuting claims that she evaded questions regarding the OVP’s confidential funds and maintaining that she attended House hearings but was not questioned. She has also filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the legality of the impeachment complaint, arguing that the House violated constitutional procedures.

The Palace has declined to comment on the substance of VP Duterte’s remarks or Senator Leila de Lima’s characterization of the “bloodbath” comment as “toxic rhetoric,” stating that the President will not interfere in the matter. The upcoming trial is expected to be a significant political event, with the Vice President’s provocative statement setting the stage for a potentially contentious legal battle.
