HAGUE, Netherlands – Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will make his initial appearance before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday. Duterte is facing charges of crimes against humanity related to his country’s drug war.
He arrived at the Hague Penitentiary Institution on Thursday morning after a warrant for his arrest was served on Tuesday.
In preparation for his appearance, Duterte appointed his former executive secretary, Salvador Medialdea, as one of his counsels.
This appointment, formalized in a handwritten power of attorney dated Wednesday, was confirmed by Duterte in a separate document requesting Medialdea’s assistance during his initial appearance before the Pre-Trial Chamber.
Duterte also requested additional assistance from the Office of Public Counsel for the Defence. The ICC Registrar has acknowledged these requests. The Registry will facilitate Medialdea’s presence at Friday’s proceedings.
