THE House Murang Pagkain SuperCommittee (QuintaComm) will pivot its focus to addressing high electricity prices, its presiding co-chair, Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda, announced.
Following Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez’s instructions, the committee will reconvene as the “Murang Kuryente Supercommittee” to investigate excessive power sector charges.
A key area of investigation will be the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) finding of ₱206 billion in disallowed expenses by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) between 2016 and 2020.
Salceda advocates for consumer refunds of these disallowed amounts, mirroring practices in the distribution sector. Further investigations will explore windfall taxes on excessive power sector profits to fund consumer refunds and a potential “Pantawid Kuryente” program.
