BI denies entry of Indonesian drug courier

admin December 1, 2024

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) intercepted an Indonesian national suspected of drug trafficking upon his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last November 27.

Muhammad Nur, 49, arrived at NAIA Terminal 3 onboard an AirAsia flight from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport.

He had been flagged by INTERPOL authorities after Lao officers discovered illicit drugs concealed in his luggage during inspection. The drugs were found after Nur had already departed for Bangkok en route to Manila.

Timely coordination among INTERPOL members enabled BI officers to intercept Nur upon his arrival in the Philippines, as part of Operation Maharlika.

Immigration officers immediately denied his entry, and he is set to be sent back to his port of origin in Bangkok.

“This successful interception shows the critical role of international cooperation in combating transnational crimes,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado. “By working closely with INTERPOL and other global partners, we ensure that our borders remain secure and protected from illicit activities,” he added.

Viado also lauded the efficient exchange of intelligence, which allowed authorities to act swiftly. “The seamless communication among NCB Vientiane, NCB Bangkok, and NCB Manila highlights the importance of vigilance and collaboration in protecting our borders,” he added
