La Mesa, Bustos dams under close watch amid heavy Habagat rains

Metrosundaily August 29, 2026

AUTHORITIES are keeping a close watch on the water levels of La Mesa Dam and Bustos Dam as heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat persist across the region. The continuous downpour has raised concerns that water releases or natural overflow from the dams may affect low‑lying communities located downstream from both facilities, prompting heightened vigilance among disaster‑response teams and local government units.

Communities along the Tullahan River are particularly at risk from La Mesa Dam, including portions of Quezon City, Valenzuela, and Malabon. Rising water levels could spill downstream, swelling the river and potentially causing flash floods in residential and commercial areas situated along its banks. Residents in these cities are advised to remain alert to sudden increases in water flow and to monitor official announcements closely.

Meanwhile, water flowing from Bustos Dam travels through the Angat River system and may affect several municipalities in Bulacan — specifically Bustos, San Rafael, Baliwag, Plaridel, Pulilan, Calumpit, Paombong, and Hagonoy — before eventually reaching Manila Bay. The extensive coverage means that numerous towns along the river’s path must remain prepared for rising waters, especially if rainfall continues or dam releases become necessary to protect structural integrity.

Authorities strongly urge all residents living in low‑lying areas and near riverbanks to stay on high alert, particularly as inclement weather persists. The public is advised to heed advisories from their local government units and disaster‑response offices, and to remain ready to evacuate or move to safer ground should water levels rise rapidly. Monitoring of the dams and downstream areas continues, with further updates to be issued as conditions warrant.
