The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Wednesday, August 13, that students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and senior citizens will no longer be required to fill out forms to avail of the 50% discounted fare on train rides.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the decision was made after observing that filling out the forms was a burdensome process for some students.
Now, individuals eligible for the discount simply need to present their IDs to the teller. “Sayang ‘yung oras ng estudyante at ng ibang pasahero (It’s a waste of the students’ and other passengers’ time),” Dizon said.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. initially launched the 50% discount in July. Dizon also announced the rollout of the white concessionary beep card for students starting in September.
This beep card, previously available only to PWDs and senior citizens, automatically applies the discounted fares.
The DOTr also anticipates the delivery of approximately 300,000 regular beep cards next week.
