Las Vegas, NV – Manny Pacquiao, in his highly anticipated return to the ring after a four-year hiatus, fought a spirited match against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on Saturday night.
Despite out-landing and out-hustling his much younger opponent, the fight ended in a majority draw, allowing Barrios to retain his title.
One judge scored the bout 115-113 in favor of Barrios, while the other two judges saw it as a 114-114 draw. The result was met with loud boos from the predominantly pro-Pacquiao crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Many observers felt Pacquiao had clearly won the fight.
Pacquiao, at 46 years old, displayed surprising speed and agility, effectively using angles and volume punching to overcome
Barrios’ height and reach advantages. He dominated several rounds, notably rounds six through nine, showcasing the skills that made him a boxing legend. Barrios, however, rallied in the final three rounds, securing enough points to earn the draw.
Both fighters expressed interest in a rematch, highlighting the excitement and competitiveness of the bout. Pacquiao, whose record now stands at 62-9-3, acknowledged a rushed training camp due to his recent political commitments in the Philippines.
Despite this, his performance was seen as inspirational, proving that age is no barrier to achieving greatness in boxing. Barrios, now 29-2-2, praised Pacquiao’s skill and experience, stating that their fight was a significant event for the sport.
The draw leaves the door open for a future rematch, a prospect that both fighters and fans eagerly anticipate.
