Ateneo mourns death of two basketball players in Aurora team-building tragedy

admin June 8, 2026

THE Ateneo de Manila University community is in deep mourning following the tragic passing of two members of its men’s basketball team — Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili — who drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on Monday.

The university confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of two promising young athletes and extending its deepest sympathies to everyone close to them.

“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time,” the statement read. Ateneo also assured the public that it is providing full support and assistance to the victims’ families, as well as to teammates, coaches, and students struggling to cope with the tragedy.

Baterbonia, only 19 years old, was a recent addition to the Blue Eagles roster. He had just competed in the Palarong Pambansa finals two weeks prior and officially committed to the Ateneo program. A standout player from Davao, he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player last year after leading his region to the championship title. Meanwhile, Divine Adili, a 21‑year‑old Nigerian student‑athlete, had already seen action for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 88, bringing his talent and experience to the team’s campaign last year.

In its message, the university appealed for understanding and respect as everyone processes their grief. “We respectfully ask for privacy and space for all those grieving as they come to terms with this profound loss. As a community, we mourn with the families and loved ones of Rene and Divine and entrust them to God’s loving mercy,” Ateneo said. The school added that details regarding wake and funeral services will be announced later, following consultations and coordination with the families of the deceased.
