Sassa Gurl
AKBAYAN Representative Perci Cendaña has strongly criticized the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for summoning Viva Entertainment following Sassa Gurl’s outspoken remarks against the double X-rating imposed on the queer film “Dreamboi.” Cendaña characterized the MTRCB’s action as an overreach of power in response to criticism.
“When public officials are criticized, they shouldn’t respond with power tripping. Makinig at umunawa,” Cendaña stated, emphasizing the need for public officials to listen and understand rather than react defensively to criticism. He argued that the MTRCB’s move stifles freedom of expression and discourages open dialogue about important social issues.
Cendaña also highlighted the significance of queer narratives in challenging societal norms and promoting inclusivity. “Queer narratives have long been dismissed as promiscuous. The Dreamboi team did an excellent job in flipping this script. Para sa tooong malaya at makulay na sining,” Rep. Cendaña added, praising the film for its artistic merit and its contribution to a more liberated and vibrant art scene.
The controversy surrounding “Dreamboi” and the subsequent summoning of Viva Entertainment has ignited a debate about censorship, artistic freedom, and the role of regulatory bodies in the Philippines. Cendaña’s remarks underscore the importance of protecting artistic expression and fostering a more tolerant and understanding society.
