A SUSPECT in the attack of a journalist in San Pablo City, Laguna last July 15 will face attempted murder after police filed the complaint.
The complaint against the suspect, a son of a barangay chairman and former city councilor, was filed on Monday, according to the Presidential Task Force on Media (PTFoMS).
The PTFoMS withheld the name of the suspect pending the prosecutor’s evaluation of the case.
The journalist, Marc Angelo Barrios of Laguna Patrol, was shot at while on his way home on a motorcycle. Barrios escaped unhurt, although his motorcycle was damaged.
The two suspects, who were also on a motorcycle, escaped.
The complaint was filed after PTFoMS executive director Paul Gutierrez asked the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to conduct a deeper probe into the incident, which the local police initially classified as a case of “threat and malicious mischief.”
Gutierrez thanked CIDG chief PM/Gen. Leo Francisco for heeding his request.
“As the government’s principal agency to address all violations of media’s rights, we are always ready to render assistance to any member of the press in need of help,” he said.
