Red tide hits Samar, Leyte

THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said based on the latest laboratory results, shellfishes collected from the following areas are now positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) or toxic red tide that is beyond the regulatory limit.

All types of shellfish and acetes sp. Alamang gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption,” said the advisory.

The BFAR said in an advisory that shellfish collected in the coastal waters of the following areas showed the presence of paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide beyond the regulatory limit:

1. Maqueda Bay (Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas, San Sebastian, Calbiga, Pinabacdao, and Hinabangan, Samar)

2. Coastal waters of Daram, Samar

3. Irong-irong Bay (Catbalogan, Samar)

4. Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City

5. Biliran Island

Further, the following areas also remain under shellfish ban

6. Villareal Bay (Villareal, Samar)

7. Cambatutay Bay (Tarangnan, Samar)

8. San Pedro Bay (Basey, Samar)

9. Carigara Bay (Capoocan, Carigara, Barugo, San Miguel, and Babatngon, Leyte)

10. Coastal Waters of Leyte, Leyte

11. Matarinao Bay (General MacArthur, Hernani, Quinapondan, and Salcedo, Eastern Samar)

A local red tide advisory is also issued by the BFAR 8 advising the public to refrain from gathering, selling and eating all types shellfishes and “alamang or hipon” from the areas indicated below to avoid possible shellfish poisoning.

1. Coastal Waters of Guiuan, Eastern Samar

2. Coastal Waters of Calbayog, Samar Fish, squid, crab, and shrimp gathered from the above-mentioned areas are safe to eat provided that all entrails are removed and washed thoroughly with running water before cooking.
