THE magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu on September 30 has damaged 62,531 homes and affected over 669,000 people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Wednesday.
Of the total, 57,677 houses were partially damaged and 4,854 were completely destroyed. The earthquake also damaged 733 infrastructures, resulted in 72 fatalities, and left 559 people injured.
Currently, 1,533 individuals (381 families) remain in evacuation centers, while nearly 1,000 families are temporarily staying with others.
Cases of landslides, fire, building collapse, and chemical leaks were also reported following the earthquake. In the affected areas, 4 out of 8 roads and 10 out of 20 bridges remain impassable, while 48 areas are still without electricity and 10 areas are experiencing communication problems.
A state of calamity has been declared in the entire province of Cebu. The NDRRMC reports that approximately ₱146 million in aid has been distributed to the victims.
Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS reported that 9,108 aftershocks have been recorded, with 38 of them felt, ranging in magnitude from 1.0 to 5.1. The frequency of aftershocks is expected to decrease in the coming days.
