PHIVOLCS reported strong aftershocks in the Mindanao area following a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck the northeastern coast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur in the early hours of Saturday.
A strong magnitude 6.1 aftershock was recorded at 12:20:26 p.m. with an epicenter located at 08.08°N, 127.23°E – 90 km N 87°E of Lingig.
It originated tectonically, with a depth of 10 kilometers. A magnitude 6 aftershock was also recorded this morning at 09:38:11 a.m. with an epicenter at 07.89°N, 127.45°E – 103 km N 70°E of Baganga in Davao Oriental.
This was followed by a magnitude 5.5 aftershock at 09:38:16 a.m., located at 08.00°N, 126.93°E – 57 km S 86°E of Lingig, with a depth of one kilometer and also tectonic in origin. A magnitude 5.2 aftershock also occurred at 11:17:12 a.m. at 08.07°N, 127.05°E – 70 km N 87°E in the area, along with magnitude 4.4 and 4.7 aftershocks at 6:45 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., respectively, according to Lingig.
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake that occurred at 6:22 a.m. on Saturday originated tectonically, with a depth of nine kilometers. PHIVOLCS initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 6.5, which was later updated to magnitude 6.8. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 08.10°N, 127.01°E – 66 km N 85°E of Lingig, Surigao del Sur.
