A 41-year-old motorcycle rider died early Sunday morning after colliding with an Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV) along Felix Avenue in Cainta, Rizal.
The fatal accident occurred just after 1 a.m.
CCTV footage of the incident shows the AUV making a left turn into a residential subdivision from the main road. The motorcycle, traveling in the opposite direction, collided with the AUV. The impact of the collision sent the motorcycle rider spinning several feet in the air before landing on the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police reports indicate that the victim was on his way home to Antipolo City after playing basketball in Cainta.
The 57-year-old AUV driver was en route to pick up family members who were traveling to a nearby province for a relative’s funeral. The rider’s family declined to comment on the accident.
The AUV driver is currently in police custody and has stated that he was surprised by the incident, claiming the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed. He is now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
“I was surprised. He was moving very fast. It’s very sad. I don’t have any bad intentions. It was really an accident,” the driver told police.
