AUTHORITIES rescued 14 individuals, including eight minors, from a human trafficking attempt on February 10, 2025, in Zamboanga City. The rescue operation was led by Assistant City Prosecutor Alfredo E. Jimenez, Jr. and the Zamboanga Sea-Based Anti-Trafficking Task Force (ZSBATTF). Two suspects were apprehended and are currently under investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) – Western Mindanao.
One of the suspects is known to be a notorious human trafficker with a history of victimizing individuals. Similar to other trafficking cases utilizing routes through the Visayas and Mindanao, the victims were promised high-paying jobs in Malaysia and provided with forged documents by the suspects for their journey.
The rescued individuals were referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for financial assistance and support to return to their homes and communities.
The successful rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving various government agencies: NBI-Western Mindanao, DOJ-IACAT Region IX, Zamboanga City Police Office, Department of Migrant Workers Region IX, PCTC-Western Mindanao, DSWD IX and CSWDO, Philippine Coast Guard, and officials from Barangay Talon-Talon.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of human trafficking utilizing southern routes in the Philippines. As the Bureau of Immigration intensifies airport inspections, traffickers are increasingly resorting to forged documents and illegal routes to facilitate departures.
Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Felix Ty urged individuals seeking employment abroad to be wary of “too good to be true” job offers, stating: “They often fail to pass through [legal exits], so they use what we call ‘southern backdoor exits.’ That alone should raise red flags. If you are going to work in another country, you must follow the legal process, including obtaining a permit from the Department of Migrant Workers.”
The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) encourages the public to remain vigilant against suspicious online job offers and to report any suspicious activities related to human trafficking to the 1343 Actionline.
