A QUEZON City police officer, Patrolman Harwin Curtney Bagga, was killed in a shootout with a robbery suspect in Barangay Commonwealth early Monday morning, June 30.
Patrolman Bagga and his colleagues were responding to a robbery report on Katipunan Street when the suspect ambushed them, opening fire. Despite being wounded, Bagga and his colleagues returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.
Bagga was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. A bullet that struck his arm reportedly pierced his chest.
The robbery victim, a food cart owner, and a bystander were also injured in the crossfire. According to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), the responding officers had previously encountered the suspect, who had even directed them towards the alleged location of the robbers.
It was only after the officers turned their backs that the suspect drew his weapon and fired. The Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing to award Bagga posthumously for his bravery and service.
