THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed on Wednesday that three Filipino seafarers were assaulted in what authorities are treating as a suspected hate crime in the United Kingdom.
The incident took place on July 31 in Avonmouth, Southwest England, while the victims were docked in the area. One of the three seafarers is in critical condition and remains under intensive care at a local hospital, while the other two sustained only minor injuries.
Local police from the Avon and Somerset force disclosed that racist language was directed toward at least one of the victims during the assault, prompting investigators to classify the case as a suspected hate crime while the probe continues. Superintendent Deepak Kenth clarified that contrary to online speculation, the injuries were not caused by a knife or similar weapon. Authorities also emphasized that the attack appears to be an isolated incident and not part of a broader pattern.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault: a 19‑year‑old man, a 45‑year‑old man, a 17‑year‑old boy, and a 38‑year‑old woman suspected of aiding one of the offenders. The DMW said its London office has already extended assistance to the victims and is closely monitoring developments. Investigations remain ongoing as police work to establish full details and determine exact motives behind the attack.
