TWENTY-FOUR Filipino nationals who have been held in detention in Russia for nine long months are finally set to come home, following an order for their release issued by Russian authorities.
The development comes directly after the successful bilateral meeting between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Russian President Vladimir Putin held in Kazan, where the welfare and safety of Filipinos residing or working in Russia were raised as a priority concern by the Philippine leader.
During their discussions, Marcos personally appealed to Putin to look into the cases of the detained Filipinos, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian considerations and the longstanding friendly relations between the two nations. The President highlighted that many of these individuals were reportedly facing legal issues stemming from misunderstandings, immigration matters, or circumstances beyond their control and that their continued detention had caused great distress to their families back in the Philippines. Putin responded positively to the request, directing relevant agencies to review their cases and facilitate their release as a gesture of goodwill and cooperation.
Following the directive, arrangements are now being finalized by both governments to process the necessary documents and organize their repatriation flight as soon as logistical requirements are met.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that consular officials are already coordinating with Russian authorities to ensure a smooth and safe return for all 24 individuals. This outcome marks a significant breakthrough in diplomatic ties and brings immense relief to the families of the detainees, who have been waiting anxiously for months to be reunited with their loved ones.
President Marcos expressed gratitude for Putin’s cooperation, noting that this result underscores the value of open dialogue and high-level engagement in resolving issues affecting citizens abroad.
