SOCIAL Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian has assured that the agency’s “Walang Gutom Kitchen” program in Pasay City is open to all Filipinos experiencing hunger.
“Everyone is welcome because no one wants to experience hunger. We need to help everyone,” said Secretary Gatchalian in a media interview.
He emphasized that those experiencing hunger do not need to undergo a verification process. They can freely enter the soup kitchen facility after providing basic information for monitoring purposes, ensuring they receive a free meal.
According to the DSWD, over 10,000 individuals have benefited from the free meals since the Walang Gutom Kitchen was launched on December 16.
When asked about the agency’s plans for 2025, the DSWD chief stated that they intend to expand the soup kitchen program nationwide.
“We know that in different areas, there is still a lot of food waste. We want to ensure that no food is wasted and that we are able to provide it to those in need,” said Secretary Gatchalian.
The Walang Gutom Kitchen is the DSWD’s latest initiative to address involuntary hunger and prevent food waste. The soup kitchen is located at the Nasdake Building in Pasay City.
