VP Sara seeks exclusive catering, asks Senate to pay costs amid security concerns

Metrosundaily July 22, 2026

IN a formal letter dated July 7 addressed to Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, Vice President Sara Duterte requested exclusive arrangements for food and beverage services for her defense team, support staff, and witnesses throughout her impeachment trial, citing “unique” circumstances and legitimate security concerns.

She proposed that all meals and refreshments be served only within the defense’s designated holding room and be sourced, prepared, and delivered solely by the Office of the Vice President’s chosen caterer. According to Duterte, these steps are necessary to ensure the safety and well‑being of everyone involved, provide adequate assurances to witnesses, and allow the proceedings to proceed in an orderly manner.

The Vice President also explicitly asked the Senate to shoulder all reasonable expenses related to these catering services and supplies.

“As these arrangements are required solely in connection with these proceedings, the OVP respectfully requests that the Senate shoulder the reasonable costs of food and beverage and catering services for the defense team, support staff, and witnesses,” she stated. She argued that such measures would guarantee the full and effective participation of her panel without compromising security, though it remains unclear whether the Senate will approve the request to charge the expenses to public funds.

Thus far, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug has confirmed that Duterte’s camp has been permitted to bring in a refrigerator, a coffee maker, and their own caterer — but the broader request for exclusive service arrangements and full cost coverage is still pending final decision. The impeachment trial began on July 6, with the prosecution currently presenting evidence on allegations that Duterte threatened the life of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and the former Speaker during a public statement earlier this year.
